Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. – Sir Winston Churchill, August 20, 1940. Churchill was referring, of course, to the miraculous achievements of the Royal Air Force in its defense of Britain over Germany's mighty Luftwaffe. Had Adolph Hitler's plan for air supremacy succeeded, the Island Nation would have been ripe for invasion and likely defeat. As it was, British airmen pushed back the Nazi tide, and as Churchill predicted, made eventual failure a certainty for the Third Reich. Robert Taylor's artwork beautifully captures three of today's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft in tight formation above a sunlit sea. Represented are Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vb, Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc, and Avro Lancaster. This limited edition print is signed by the artist, and RAF pilots Air Vice Marshall Johnnie Johnson (CB, CBE, DSO, DFC) deceased, Warrant Officer Norman Jackson (VC), and Group Captain Peter Townsend (CVO, DSO, DFC) deceased. This fitting tribute to the selfless sacrifice of Allied airmen exists in a long sold out edition of only 1000 examples worldwide. Dimensions unframed 27 x 20. Published by the Military Gallery, Bath, England.
