The International Watch Company of Schaffhausen, Switzerland has created a fitting tribute to memorialize one of the tide-turning aircraft of World War II; the Supermarine Spitfire Mark XV. It is no coincidence that this Swiss watchmaker constructed this exclusive timepiece, since their relationship with Britain's Royal Air Force extends back to the 1930's. The new pilots watch differs from its forebears in that it has an automatic (self winding) movement and a 42 hour power reserve. The case features a soft iron insert which protects the movement from magnetic fields (engines, mobile phones, etc.). The black face is signed with the IWC logo and Schaffhausen text, and Spitfire is boldly emblazoned across the bottom. Luminous hands are of the Poires Paris type, and the second hand has a stop feature activated simply by pulling out the screw-down crown. Movement is IWC 37542 Calibre Automatic, and the watch is waterproof to 60 meters. This particular example is numbered 390 in a total production run of 1000 worldwide, and features both a stainless IWC bracelet with striking engine turning on the deployment clasp, and a signed IWC buffalo leather strap which is in mint/new condition. The watch back is graced with a high-relief engraving of the famous Supermarine fighter, along with the edition and serial numbers. The original plastic protective film with IWC logo still covers the back. Unique to the Spitfire Mark XV watch is IWC's magnificent presentation; each timepiece is cradled in a maroon calfskin case secured by a pushbutton closure, and is accompanied by a 1.6 meter long cashmere scarf embroidered with IWC and Spitfire. A full complement of paperwork and manuals is provided, including certificate of authenticity, operating manuals, and Supermarine and IWC Spitfire illustrated history. Tools are also included to adjust the stainless bracelet to size. The watch box, papers, tools and scarf are contained in a purpose-built IWC outer box (not pictured). This is a unique opportunity to acquire an incredibly rare fine timepiece dedicated to The Few to whom so many owed so much.
